Dedra Russell’s 30-year journey with VOA is a testament to resilience, compassion, and the power of second chances. Her story began as a young mother in the Options Program for women and children. While participating, she gave birth to her son, Brandon, one of the program’s first babies. “They made me feel like family,” Dedra recalls, cherishing the support and kindness shown by the staff.
Inspired to give back, Dedra joined VOA in 1993 as support staff, starting a career defined by her passion for helping others. Over the years, she advanced through roles like children’s services coordinator and case manager, ultimately becoming a program director. Through it all, her priority has been clear: to support families, especially children. “Even in my hardest times, children were always my focus,” she says.
Dedra’s leadership is guided by compassion and empathy. She believes in giving people a fresh start and understanding their struggles without judgment. “We help frame the picture of a better life, even if we can’t finish it ourselves,” she explains.
Among her most cherished memories are moments of transformation: a child’s first Christmas in a safe home, the excitement of having their own room, or the joy of stability. One young client, Austin, perfectly captured her impact by calling her “the mother of all children,” a sentiment that continues to inspire her.
As Dedra celebrates 30 years with VOA, she reflects on what drives her. “Helping people has been the common thread in all my roles,” she shares. “It’s what brings me back every day.”
Congratulations, Dedra, on 30 years of unwavering dedication and for exemplifying the heart of VOA’s mission to uplift and transform lives!
