Employee Spotlight: Melissa Amaro

Melissa Amaro, an Intake Screening Specialist for Supportive Services for Veterans and Families, exemplifies dedication and compassion in her role. At the front desk, she is often the first point of contact for veterans seeking assistance, offering a warm welcome and crucial support. “I greet everybody that walks through the door,” she says, highlighting the importance of making individuals feel valued from the moment they enter. Melissa values the sense of community her work fosters, finding immense satisfaction in helping individuals rebuild their lives. “It’s really good to feel that…sense of local community and being able to help people.”
 
 Her journey to this role began with volunteering at the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services, which ignited her passion for community service. Melissa’s commitment is evident in her interactions with veterans, providing them not only with immediate assistance but also with long-term support and resources. She emphasizes the importance of patience and understanding, especially when dealing with those who are struggling with mental health issues, homelessness, or financial difficulties. “I just love giving back to the community, interacting with people, and helping people just make their lives better.”
 
 Melissa’s heartfelt dedication to improving the lives of veterans and their families makes her an invaluable asset to the organization and the community she serves. “If you’re patient with people and you just let ’em know you’re there to support them and give them guidance, they can do it,” she asserts, underscoring her belief in the potential of every individual she assists.
